Competition details and mechanics:
Event
SIP Abacus & Mental Math Friendship Competition
Competition Date
August 21 & 26, 2024
Competition Venue
Online via Zoom
Objectives
This competition aims to provide SIP Abacus students an opportunity to exercise a growth mindset, to push themselves to perform at their best, to motivate them to practice their skills, and to recognize their hard work and achievement. At the same time, it also serves as a valuable experience for students to participate in an abacus and mental math competition and gain the proper attitude and confidence to compete.
Eligible Participants
Currently enrolled SIP Abacus students in levels Foundation 2 to GMC are eligible to join the competition.
Category Groupings & Participating Level
Participants shall be grouped and compete according to their current course level. For students who will take their assessment to move up a level starting July 1, they can compete in the level they were in as of June 30, 2024.
*Participants cannot compete in a level they previously competed in.
Registration Period
Regular registration is from July 7 to 31, 2024. Students must register online to be listed as an official participant of the competition.
Registration Fee
The registration fee is P300.00 for each participant. Please send your proof of payment to the SIP Abacus Viber number with the child's name & level.
Competition Proper
The competition will be held online via Zoom. A timeslot will be assigned per batch. Participants should log in during their assigned timeslot using a desktop computer or a laptop. Participants should have their abacus and water bottle prepared.
Two devices per participant are required to be logged in the Zoom meeting and have their videos on during the competition proper. The first device is to be placed in front of the student for them to see the Question Paper and for them to type their answers, while a second device (like a mobile phone) is to be positioned on a clamp or held by the parent a few steps away to take a video of the student, with the first screen and the table with the student’s abacus in view.
There will be three events in the competition:
Event 1: Addition & Subtraction with Abacus (for F2 & up)
Event 2: Addition & Subtraction using Mental Abacus (for F3 & up)
Event 3: Multiplication & Division using Mental Abacus (for F4 & up)
After the signal to start is given for each event, questions will be shown and participants should type their answer on the appropriate space in the answer form. When the allotted time is up, participants must submit their answers. It is the students’ responsibility to make sure they have submitted their answers successfully within the time given. Only answers that are received on time will be considered for checking.
Decorum
By joining, all participants agree and are expected to display the qualities of honesty, good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, and a growth mindset. In case where there will be internet connection issues that are out of our control, we encourage all participants and parents to take it in stride and keep in mind the goals of the competition, which are for the students to challenge themselves, have fun, and gain the proper attitude and confidence for competitions.
Scoring and Determination of Winners
Checking and scoring will be done afterwards. The overall score of each participant shall be computed by adding his/her scores for all the events that he/she should have participated in based on his/her category.
The top scorers for each category will get an award. This shall be determined by getting the overall top 3 scorers in each category across the different rounds. In case of ties, additional questions will be given to break the tie.
Announcement of Winners
A list of winners shall be announced on the SIP Abacus Philippines Facebook page and on the competition website.
Awards shall be sent to the winners after the event. There will be an awarding ceremony in December. Exact date and time to be announced.
